When should I refer my child?

  • Using right hand for some tasks and left for others and does not appear to have established a clear dominant side, normally established by 5-6 years old.

  • Struggling to grip the pencil correctly, using a fisted grip. Colouring, writing or drawing is messy, slow or is not age appropriate.

  • Struggling to space out written work on lined paper.

  • Tiring easily while playing outdoors, avoiding climbing or a tendency to lean on the table or other children.

  • Struggling to keep up with academic demands.

  • Struggling to learn to ride a bike, do buttons and zips, eat with a knife and fork or learn new rhythmical activities like hand clapping songs or sport activities.

  • Very fussy eaters, those that dislike getting dirty, are scared of swinging or climbing or sensitive to loud noises.

  • Struggling to do everyday tasks independently, using inefficient ways of doing things, working very slowly or requiring constant support.

  • Hyperactive behviour or daydreaming and struggling to focus in class.

  • Concentration difficulties and problems with behaviour, social skills or impulsivity.

  • Excessively whinny, clingy behaviour, avoiding social outings or struggling to adapt to changes in routine.

Please note that this is just a guideline and does not necessarily mean that your child will need therapy. Some difficulties can be age approrpiate.
